LAKELAND —

A house fire that broke out Monday morning is being blamed on a child who played with a lighter.

According to reports, the fire broke out shortly after 11 a.m. on Golconda Road in Lakeland.

Firefighters said the blaze was contained to the back bedroom of the house, which was occupied by three adults and two children. One of the children was 5, while the other was 7 months old.

The mother smelled the smoke and got the children out of the home, the report said. No one was injured in the fire.

The investigator determined the fire was started by the 5-year-old child, who was playing with a lighter.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
